Uttaranchal has sought help from the Centre to develop the famous ''char dhams'' of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri for promoting pilgrim tourism in the nascent hill state. In a letter writen to the prime minister, Uttaranchal Chief Minister N.D. Tiwari has said that infrastructural facilities should be improved at all these shrines.

He also sought the Centre's help in restoring the Gangotri temple which suffered damage during heavy snow and avalanches in the region in the past few months. A report on the extent of the damage was also enclosed alongwith the letter.
The Prime Minister, during his visit to Nainital towards the end of March, had announced central assistance to improve the facilities at the four famous shrines of the state. Bureau Report
