Guwahati, Aug 15: The boycott and strike call of militant groups in the north east on the Independence day today failed to make an impact in Assam with celebrations taking place as scheduled attended by the public in large numbers, official sources said here.
Like previous years people defying the call came out in large numbers to attend the official flag hoisting ceremonies and other programmes during the day, the sources said.
Though night running of trains under northeast frontier railway were suspended for two days from last night, day trains and air services functioned as usual, they said. Long distance bus services were, however, nearly absent and only a skeleton city bus service operated here.
Meanwhile, unprecedented security arrangements had been put in place in view of the "boycott and strike" call by militants with additional platoons deployed in the sensitive districts coupled with round-the-clock vigilance.
Patrolling on the national highways and militant-infested areas was stepped up and additional troops posted in sensitive areas and on vital installations.

The Army and Para-Military Forces were manning strategic points and checking all entry and exit vehicles to and from Guwahati, the sources added.
