Raipur, Dec 01: The fate of 819 candidates, seeking to enter the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly, was sealed in micro-chips as the state recorded more than 62 per cent turnout of its 13 million voters today, in elections marred by sporadic violence by Naxalites. The Election Commision ordered a re-poll in 17 polling stations in Bastar region where poll parties could not reach the booths because of inclement weather and threats by Naxalites the Peoples War (PW).
State Chief Electoral Officer (CEC) Dr. Kalyan Kumar Chakravorty told reporters here that ''polling progressed well throughout the day barring stray incidents in Bastar and Sarguja in south and north Chhattisgarh respectively.''
The exact polling percentage in the 16 districts of the state is expected by late night.
However, polling percentage in three assembly segments of Dantewara-St, Konta-St, Bijapur-St was reported to be low in the wake of a spate of disruptive activities by Naxalites. State Industries Minister Mahendra Karma, who is on the Naxalite hit list, is seeking re-election from Dantewara.
