New Delhi: The king of tragedy in Indian cinema, who changed the way audience looked at pathos—Dilip Kumar celebrates his birthday today. The thespian turns 92, with an illustrious career in Bollywood. The man who was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan in 1922, became popular as Dilip saab (addressed with respect).

His film trajectory boasts of working with the best of the filmmakers of his time. Noted director Satyajit Ray described him as the 'ultimate method actor' in the industry. Dilip Kumar made his big screen debut with 'Jwar Bhata' in 1944. He did over 60 films, spanning around six decades in the Hindi film industry.


His performance in 'Andaz', 'Aan', 'Devdas' and the most popular 'Mughal-e-Azam' became a cult in its own sense. His impeccable acting talent and innocence personified performance on screen was loved by his audiences in films such as 'Ganga Jamuna', 'Madhumati' and 'Naya Daur'.


His on screen chemistry with veteran actress Vyjayanthimala was most loved by his fans. He married actress Saira Banu in 1966, who happens to be 22 years younger than him. He was last seen in 'Qila' which released in 1998.


The handsome 'Devdas' was awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994, and in the year 1998 he was honoured with the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award conferred by the government of Pakistan.


The veteran actor proudly holds the Guinness World Record for winning the maximum number of awards by an Indian actor. He has 8 Filmfare Best Actor awards and 19 Filmfare nominations in his list to name a few.


Dilip Kumar was also appointed as the Sheriff of Mumbai (an honorary position) in 1980, the Government of India honored Kumar with the Padma Bhushan in 1991. The 92-year-old actor was recently admitted in Lilavati Hospital hospital after complaining chest pain.


However, the strong willed actor was determined to be home for birthday celebrations today, reportedly.
