The year 2001 brought both cheers and tears to the Hindi film industry. Of the over 100 odd Hindi films that were made, only four or five could be counted as profitable ventures. Out of these, perhaps only three were deemed as superhits by trade observers. Well, cinegoers’ tastes are changing so fast that film-makers, even the most seasoned ones, are unable to gauge the box-office pulse. Take the case of Subhash Ghai’s Yaadein. A well-known maker like Ghai had to bite the dust, while a relatively unknown maker like Ashutosh Gowariker, took even the west by storm, when it came to Lagaan.
