Mumbai, Aug 23: As part of technological evolution in orthopaedic surgical procedures, Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) surgery is being made available for the first time in the city for patients suffering from severe arthritic joints and hips.
The BHR surgery explores possibilities of providing long-term solution to cases of severe arthritis of the hip joint and tries to replace a durable substitute, which can be implanted into patients of any age group, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Prasham N Shah told reporters here today.
With quick results within days of placing the implants, the patient can continue with his normal activity, Shah who has already performed a couple of surgeries using this method, said.
The surgical technique, which has evolved over a period of ten years in Birmingham under Dr Derrick Macminn, involves resurfacing of the eroded bones head of femur and socket, he said. The ball and socket are resurfaced with a chromium cobalt metal surface without the need to cut off the ball completely as in total hip replacement.
"The socket is reamed and resurfaced with metal cup, fitting exactly in place and in size of the original socket thereby lot of the original normal bone mass is retained," Shah said.

Excellent surface erosion resistance is provided by the highly polished ad honed cobalt-chrome implant, he said adding that "this has improved the life expectancy of the implant by at least three times over the conventional implants."

The patient can take up normal activities after the surgery, he claimed.
