Mumbai, Jun 01: A man was shot dead when he ran to rescue a grocery shop-owner, who was being robbed by a gang of criminals at suburban Khar in north-west Mumbai late last night, police said here today. The incident occurred when three unidentified persons stopped the two-wheeler of the shop-owner, Sanjay Gala and made good their escape after snatching his bag, police said.

When Gala raised an alarm, by-standers including one Gajanan Rama Magar, 48, chased the trio. But one of them fired at Magar from his country-made revolver, police added.

Magar, who sustained a bullet wound on his neck, was rushed to nearby Bhabha hospital, where he was proclaimed dead before admission, police said.

Gala's bag contained Rs 10,000, police said adding that they have launched a manhunt for the criminals.

In yet another incident, a businessman Navin Shah was robbed by six unidentified robbers near Kurla in central Mumbai last night, police said.

Shah's vehicle was stopped by the robbers, who were travelling in a Maruti esteem, police said. The criminals smashed glass-panes of Shah's vehicle, attacked him with choppers and made good their escape with Rs 1.80 lakhs.
