Jaipur, Aug 21: Rajasthan government today decided to give constitutional status to the state scheduled castes and tribes commission to make it more effective.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot here this morning.

For giving the constitutional status to the commission, set up by the government in march 2001 by an administrative order, a bill will be presented before the assembly in the monsoon session, which began today, an official release said.

The legislative sanction to the commission would enable it to hold inquiries on oral and written complaints and seek progress reports from government departments about welfare programmes for SC and ST people, it said.
The bill will provide powers of civil court to the commission whose annual reports would have to be tabled in the assembly by the state government.

The cabinet also decided to bring another legislation for according recognition to non-government educational institutes established under Rajasthan Public Trust Act, release added.
