New Delhi, Aug 01: A bill which will help in transfer of foreign convicted persons to their country and vice versa was adopted by Lok Sabha today. Replying to a brief debate on Repatriation of Prisoners Bill, minister of state for home I D Swami said that the humanitarian law in conjunction with bilateral treaties would help transfer of foreign convicted persons languishing in Indian jails to their country.
Indians languishing in foreign jails could be transferred back home through the legislation, he said.
The minister said that there is at present no legal provisions under which a foreign prisoner could be transferred outside India.
He said that india has bilateral treaties in this regard only with three countries -- the UK, Canada and Norway so far.
The law would help enter similar treaties with other countries, the minister said.
P H Pandian (AIADMK), Ramesh Chennithala (Cong), Arun Kumar (Samata), Ramdas Athavale (RPI), Girdharilal Bhargav and Rasasingh Rawat (both BJP) participated in the discussion.
