Bhagalpur (Bihar), Dec 20: Over 700 prisoners on an indefinite hunger strike in Bhagalpur jail since Tuesday, have called it off after the district administration promised to look into their demands, official sources said today. The prisoners ended their strike last night after the district officials, headed by Bhagalpur Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) S P Verma, spoke to them, jail superintendent Pradip Kumar Jha told reporters.
The prisoners were promised early recommendations of remission of sentences while food, water and sanitation facilities would be improved, Jha said.

Inspector general (prisons) had assured the Bhagalpur jail authorities that he would look into the matter of remission of sentences promptly and sincerely, he said. Bureau Report
