London, Feb 25: Five men accused of plotting to kidnap Victoria Beckham, pop star wife of English soccer star David Beckham, appeared before a British court on Monday.
London, Feb 25: Five men accused of plotting to kidnap Victoria Beckham, pop star wife of English soccer star David Beckham, appeared before a British court on Monday.
Scotland Yard's special kidnap unit arrested the men -- Joseph Rivas, Adrian Pasareanu, Sorin Rusu, Alin Turcu and Luzum Balliu -- last November after a tip-off from a tabloid newspaper but the men were not charged until this month.
Pasareanu is also charged with possession of a firearm and an imitation firearm. Details of the men's backgrounds were not revealed during the hearing at London's Middlesex Guildhall Crown but they were aided by Romanian and Albanian translators.
The court was told the trial could last up to three months and the men were remanded in custody until the next hearing date could be set.
Beckham's performance on the field has made him the darling of soccer fans, while his wife shot to fame with the Spice Girls pop band in the 1990s.
But fame has come at a price, and the Beckhams have tightened security around them ever since an earlier kidnap scare in 2000.
