Kolkata, Oct 07: Train services of eastern and South Eastern Railway to and from Howrah station were seriously affected today due to incessant rain that lashed the city. E.R sources here said train services were hit as the railway tracks in Howrah Yard, especially near car shed, was submerged under rain water causing failure to track circuit and signalling system.
The sources said despite best efforts by the railway engineers and staff, water could not be drained out as the water level outside the railway yard was higher.
As a result of this, there way delay in running of both long distance and EMU locals. Although all long distance trains left Howrah, 12 pairs of suburban trains were cancelled upto 5 pm.
Four other Howrah bound EMU trains were terminated at Liluah and Bally station from where they were run as up trains.
A number of long distance trains including Amritsar Mail, Himgiri Express, Chambal Express, Mumbai Mail were rescheduled the sources said.
South Eastern Railway sources said that train services on the Howrah-Kharagpur section were affected due to water logging at howrah yard.
The sources said long distance and local trains, both up and down, were running behind schedule. There was ,however, no cancellation of train services, the sources said.
