Dehra Dun, Nov 20: The famous Badrinath shrine, situated in the Garhwal Himalayas in the hill state of Uttaranchal, closed for the winter period for over five months. Amidst chanting of Vedic hymns, the chief priest of the temple announced the closure of the holy shrine for the winter period last night, as hundreds of devotees thronged the lord Shiva temple, Jagat Singh Bisht, chief executive officer of Badrinath Kedarnath temple committee, told.

"It was perhaps the first time that the portals of Badrinath temple were closed during the night period because of its mahurat," Bisht said. The closure of Badrinath temple comes less than a month after three other famous Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath situated in Uttarkashi district, were also closed for winter.

All the four shrines, collectively known as the 'Char Dhams', would reopen for pilgrims in April-May next year, officials said. A record ten lakh pilgrims have visited Badrinath and Kedarnath shrines since April this year when the doors of the two shrines were opened to the public, the officials said.
