Kolkata, June 30: Two CPI (M) workers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of a Trinamool Congress activist at Takapara village of Midnapore East district of West Bengal, IGP (law and order) Chayan Mukherjee said today. The IGP told newsmen that the incident occurred when re-polling was in progress at the Takapura Gram Panchayat on Saturday following a tie between the CPI (M) and TC during the recent Panchayat elections.
During the polling, a clash ensued between workers of the two parties in which TC activist Surajit Khatua received gunshot injures. He later died at the hospital. Stating that 11 CPI (M) activists were named in the FIR in connection with the incident, Mukherjee said two of them were arrested yesterday, while a search was on for the others. The 12-hour 'Nandigram bandh' called by the TC today in protest against the killing, was peaceful, Mukherjee said. Bureau Report
