Dehradun, June 13: Uttaranchal government today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the police lathicharge on teachers, even as the issue rocked the assembly with opposition demanding an immediate discussion on the issue. As soon as the House assembled, members belonging to BJP, BSP, NCP and Uttarkhand Kranti Dal (UKD) stormed into the well of the House protesting against the police action yesterday in which at least six teachers were injured.

Amid acrimonious scenes, Speaker Yashpal Arya adjourned the House for half an hour.

When the House reassembled, the Speaker agreed to a discussion on the issue.

Raising the issue, Ajay Bhatt (BJP) alleged that police, at the behest of the government, lathicharged "innocent" teachers who were peacefully demonstrating for their long pending demand of regularisation.

Replying to the discussion, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Indira Hridayesh said the government was sensitive to the problems of teachers but police had to resort to lathicharge when the demonstrating teachers tried to lock the state directorate.

The government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter, she added.

Dissatisfied with the minister's reply, the entire opposition staged a walk-out shouting slogans against the government.
