Guwahati, Dec 31: Prominent personalities and
several organisations cutting across all sections of society
have called for a 'political solution' to the problem of
insurgency in the region through negotiations and an end to
the operations in Bhutan.
AASU president Prabin Boro today demanded that the Centre
initiate talks with militant outfits like the Ulfa and NDFB to
find a political solution and ensure that the operations in
Bhutan are called off.
"The government must declare an unilateral ceasefire to create congenial atmosphere for talks with militant outfits and the militants should also take positive steps for solution to their problems through dialogues'', Boro said in a statement here.
He also expressed concern at the killing of militants and their kin including women and children in Bhutan and demanded that the bodies of those killed should be handed over to the respective families.
The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYCP), another frontal youth organisation of the state, also called for an end to the operations and wanted the problem to be solved through negotiations.
AJYCP president Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee asked the Ulfa and NDFB to 'reciprocate' and respond to the people's wishes and give up violence and come forward for negotiations.
