Major trade unions, which spearheaded the stir by transport workers demanding hiked bonus, withdrew the strike on the 17th day on Sunday in deference to the directives of the Madras High Court.
Convenor of the joint action committee of trade unions, a Sounderarajan, announcing the withdrawal of the strike, read out a resolution adopted at a meeting to nearly 300 workers. He told reporters that the strike was being withdrawn in deference to the direction of the madras high court on Friday which said it would have to decide the case on merits if the stalemate between the unions and the Tamil Nadu government over bonus continued. He said the unions would also file a petition in the high court to state that it had withdrawn the strike, as the case had been posted for hearing on Monday. The resolution said that considering the problems which had risen due to the strike and keeping in mind the advice given by the court that at appropriate time the unions had right to agitate, the unions should withdraw the strike.
