Ranil`s party rejects Chandrika offer
Colombo, Nov 08: Sri Lanka Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe`s government today rejected an offer of a unity regime by President Chndrika Kumaratunga as a way out of the country`s current political crisis.
Justice Minister W J M Lokubandara said the
government did not think Kumaratunga's overnight offer of a
"grand alliance of patriotric forces for national
reconstruction and reconstruction" was serious.
"What she has to do first is to restore the three
ministers she sacked and go to cabinet and discuss any issue,"
Lokubandara said.
"You can't create turmoil and then invite people for
talks," he added.
In a televised address, Kumaratunga yesterday invited
political parties to form a ‘national reconciliation’
government after charging Wickremesinghe's government with
violating national sovereignty by entering into a ceasefire
accord with Tamil tiger rebels.
"I invite all to form a grand alliance of all
patriotic forces and form a government of national
reconciliation," she said.
"I stand ready to discuss with all parties, including
the Prime Minister," she said.
