Houston, Nov 18: Andy Roddick officially became the second-youngest man to finish a season at no 1 when the final ATP tour computer rankings of 2003 were released yesterday.
The US Open champion closed with 4,535 points, 160 more than Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, who moved up from no 3 by winning the tennis Masters Cup yesterday.
French Open winner Juan Carlos Ferrero finished third, while eight-time major champ Andre Agassi was no 4. Agassi`s runner-up showing at the season-closing tennis Masters Cup moved him past Guillermo Coria.
Rainer Schuettler, who lost to agassi in the Australian Open final in January, was no 6, followed by Carlos Moya, David Nalbandian, Wimbledon runner-up Mark Philippoussis and Sebastien Grosjean.
Roddick, 21, won six titles this season and compiled a tour-best 19-match winning streak. He`s the 13th man to end a year atop the rankings since they began in 1973, and the sixth American.

Only Lleyton Hewitt, who was 20 in 2001, was a younger year-end no. 1. "It`s a pretty big accomplishment for me - something I never thought would happen or was possible," said Roddick, who lost to Federer on Saturday in the semifinals of the year`s last tournament.

"Maybe I snuck up on some people, I don`t know. I`m ecstatic about it."

Justine Henin-Hardenne, the only woman to win two major titles this year, finished atop the WTA tour rankings last week. Kim Clijsters was second, followed by Serena Williams.
