Beijing, June 22: The 'Kailash Mansarovar yatra', deferred after the Sars scare, is scheduled to resume from July eight, though, on a lower scale, with china deciding to reopen Tibet to foreign tourists from July 1, official sources said today. "Tibet autonomous region will resume tourism activities from July 1, and begin to receive domestic and overseas tourists," official Xinhua news agency reported from Lhasa quoting regional tourism bureau officials.

China had halted tourism activities to the Himalayan region from April 25, but following the control of the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Tibet was now safe for tourists, it said.

Director of the regional tourism bureau, Zhang Wansheng said intra-regional tourism activities would resume from next Saturday, and that the region would receive tourists outside Tibet from July 1.

The closure of Tibet to foreign nationals had resulted in the postponement of the official 'Kailash Manasarovar yatra' 2003 through the Lipulekh pass route.
Sources said that at the request of government of India and keeping in view the importance of the pilgrimage, the Chinese government has now informed India that they are in a position to receive Kailash Manasarovar pilgrims.

However, due to the shorter time available for the yatra this year, the first batch could have a maximum of only 30 pilgrims. The subsequent nine batches could have a maximum of 40 pilgrims. The first batch is scheduled to leave Delhi on July 8, 2003.
