Georgetown (Guyana), Aug 28: Guyana cricket officials said today they would nominate former Test opener Stephen Comacho for the presidency of the West Indies Cricket Board. Comacho, 58, who has served as chief executive officer of the Guyana Cricket Board, replaces current board president Chetram Singh as the country's nominee.

Singh withdrew last month because of links to organised gambling, which is forbidden among representatives to the london-based international cricket board. "I had to withdraw," said Singh, who owns a horse racing business in Guyana's capital, Georgetown.

"We are now talking to other boards in the region to get one of them to second Comacho's nomination," which is needed by Friday's deadline, Singh said. Comacho, who opened for Guyana in the 1960s and 70s, played 11 Test matches for the West Indies. He later served on the local cricket board as secretary, selector and chief executive officer. Currently he lives in Antigua.

The West Indies Board will elect a new leader September 30 in Antigua to replace wes hall, who resigned for health reasons last month.

Other names put forth as possible nominees include West Indies vice-captain and wicketkeeper Dereyck Murray of Trinidad, Retired Banker Teddy Griffith of Barbados and Anguillan Banker Val Banks, of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association. Banks is now acting president of the West Indies Board, which represents Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands and Trinidad and Tobago, among others.
