Guwahati, Dec 01: Amidst high security an estimated 70 per cent voters exercised their franchise in the elections to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and municipal boards and town committees in Assam. State Election Commission sources here said the voters cast their ballot for 57 of 60 Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) wards and 54 municipal boards and town committees spread across the state in polls today which were peaceful.
Election to civic bodies in trouble-torn Tinsukia, Doom Dooma and Makum were withheld until December 15 due to the recent situation arising out of the anti-Bihari violence.
The state wore a festive look with people, particularly women coming out in their finery to cast their vote to decide the fate of 2498 candidates, including 367 for GMC.
The key players in the polls are Congress, Asom Gana Parishad and BJP who are promising to improve the civic amenities of the citizens.
Meanwhile, strict security arrangements had been made throughout the state in view of the hustings with army and para-military forces stepping up patrolling and strict vigil in sensitive places.
All eyes are, however, on the prestigious Guwahati Municipal Corporation election. Bureau Report
