Surat, June 16: A local court today deferred till June 19 the bail plea of Sunanda Shetty, mother of actress Shilpa Shetty, in a case of alleged extortion even as the bail petition of her husband and co-accused Surendra is scheduled to come before the Gujarat High Court tomorrow. Both Sunanda and Surendra are accused in an extortion case filed against them by a Saree manufacturer in Surat. Prosecutor Jatin Gandhi filed an application in the Surat court saying that the Investigating Officer D D Damor had gone to Ahmedabad to meet government pleader A D Oza as the bail petition of Surendra is coming up in Gujarat High Court.

Sunanda has urged for a regular bail in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Surat. She was granted transit bail by a Mumbai court which directed her to seek regular bail in a Surat court as the case was registered in Gujarat.
Sunanda's husband and co-accused, Surendra, has been granted interim liberty by Gujarat High Court and asked to deposit his passport. As per the high court directive, he has been interrogated by Umra police in Surat.

Police registered a case against Shilpa's parents and underworld don Fazlu Rehman for allegedly extorting money from owner of Prafful Sarees Pankaj Agarwal. They alleged that Shilpa's parents had ‘hired’ a gangster to recover Rs 80 lakh payable to her by Agarwal for acting in an advertising film.

Police claimed that Surendra had confessed to have contacted former Gujarat minister Purshottam Solanki and his brother to recover the dues. However, Surendra's advocate has refuted the claim.
