France, UK, Russia and several countries on Tuesday called for lending urgency in formation of a broad-based government in Afghanistan after the opposition Northern Alliance troops captured Kabul while Pakistan said a UN-backed international force should take over the Afghan capital.
It is extremely urgent to set up a political solution for Afghanistan, French President Jaques Chirac told reporters in Abu Dhabi after talks with UAE President Shaikh Zayed. “The transition authorities will have to find room for each group, each ethnic group, apart from the Taliban,” He said.
“Nothing could be more serious than to have an uncertain transition period, uncoordinated, which does not allow stability,” Chirac said. Britain urged the UN and the international community to address the situation in Kabul with the idea of forming a broad-based government.
The UN and the rest of the international community needs to address the situation as we find it in Kabul, with the aim remaining a broad-based interim government which reflects the diversity of the country and to which all within Afghanistan have access, The foreign office said in a statement.
Russian deputy foreign minister Alexander Losyukov said in Moscow the new Afghan administration must be based on a multi-ethnic government and warned against any attempt by external forces to place their people in Kabul. Bureau Report
