Delhi University lecturer Syed Abdul Rehman Geelani, one of the alleged conspirators in the December 13 terrorist attack on Parliament, was suspended on Monday from the Zakir Hussain College where he taught Arabic. The decision to suspend the accused, subject to approval by the university vice chairman, was taken by a 20-member committee of the college headed by its chairman Khursheed Alam Khan.
While the suspension order cites absence from the college as the reason, Khan said that it would be in force till the case against him continued. The special cell of the Delhi Police, probing the sensational attack on Parliament, was able to crack the case after Geelani's arrest. Police tracked down the lecturer after they got his telephone number from among the telephone calls made by the Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists who stormed Parliament. On interrogation, he told the police that he assisted Mohammad Afzal -- the main conspirator in the attack -- due to ''ideological reasons.'' It was Geelani who disclosed that the conspiracy was hatched by Afzal at his cousin Shauakat Hussain's house in Mukherjee Nagar in North Delhi. Geelani has now been remanded in judicial custody along with Shaukat, while Afzal is still on police remand.
