Nagpur, Mar 09: The Nagpur Bench of the Mumbai High Court has directed the civic authorities not to permit the RSS to hold its shakha at Lendra Park, a public garden, in posh Ramdaspeth locality of the city and has also banned any public programmes there. A division bench comprising Justice JN Patel and Justice Bhushan Gavai passed the directions on Monday, during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Vijay Talewar, a social activist.

The petitioner had sought a ban on holding any programme, socio-cultural or otherwise at Lendra Park of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on the grounds that various organisations, including the RSS were using the garden and park, without making any payment of charges for use. The RSS shakhas pose a hindrance to the residents of nearby areas in Ramdaspeth, the petitioner claimed. The PIL further pointed out that Lendra Park is being renovated recently and a track for joggers has been laid and park has been earmarked for recreational activities.

The petition said some social-cultural organisations have monopolised the use of Lendra Park for various religious programmes.

The petitioner has demanded that Municipal Corporation be directed to recover user charges from RSS.

The Bench directed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to ensure that the park was not used by any religious or cultural organisations including the RSS. Bureau Report
