Gangtok, Aug 20: Sikkim police today arrested a man said to be an ISI agent from Deorali, about six km from here. It is first such arrest in the Himalayan state. The ISI man, identified as Dileep Kumar Roy, was picked up by the crime branch of state police from outside the army cantonment gate at Deorali following a tip-off, DIG (Range) S D Negi told at a press conference.
Several sensitive documents, pertaining to the movement and location of troops in the border state, were recovered from him, Negi said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 40-year-old Roy, a permanent resident of Dhaka who retired as a Havildar Major from the Bangladesh army in 1991, was picked by the ISI early this year, Negi said.
Roy had started making contacts in Gangtok to gather vital information about deployment of troops in Sikkim and some parts of West Bengal, he said.
Roy, who worked as the physical training instructor in the 38th air regiment of Bangladesh army and as the artillary gun instructor in a military school at Chittaganj had visited Gangtok in June besides Kalimpong, Siliguri and Binaguri in West Bengal, where there are huge army establishments, Negi said.
