Jethmalani, who had expressed his desire to contest the
presidential poll, today came out in full support of the
'ballistic missile man' A P J Abdul Kalam saying his election as
president would send right message to the world about India's
democracy.
Formally voicing his decision to go out of the race, the former Law Minister told a news agency, “ A top scientist of the country and a member of an important minority is being installed as president will send the right message to the entire world about India's democracy.”
“ I highly appreciate the most sensible decision that has been taken by the NDA government in proposing Dr Kalam's name as the next President of India,” he said.
Jethmalani, who recently had said that he would be a serious contender in the presidential elections, said I “Appeal to all political parties to accept the choice without demour so that the choice should appear to be unanimous.”
Referring to the recent tradition of no president going for a second term and refusing to comment over the political activity that preceeded before Kalam emerged as the choice, the former Law Minister said, “ This is no reflection on the present incumbent who is retiring only out of respect for a tradition which has come to be fairly and firmly established.”
