Dhaka, June 08: The half-day opposition sponsored general strike to protest the killing of a prominent Awami League leader disrupted normal life in northern Natore district of Bangladesh today. Traders downed shutters and communication was disrupted in a large area of greater Rajshahi district in response to the strike called to protest the killing of vice-president of AL's district unit Momtazuddin Ahmed, official sources said here.

Ahmed, a former MP, was allegedly hacked to death with axes by a group of unidentified armed men on Friday night.

Local AL leaders have alleged that the ruling BNP was behind the killing, a charge denied by the party.

Police have arrested a BNP activist in connection with the killing.
