Islamabad, Aug 29: A 24-member delegation of Indian labour organisations crossed into Pakistan by the new Delhi-Lahore bus today to attend the South Asian labour for peace conference beginning September 1.
The Indian labour leaders will leave for Karachi tomorrow by train from Lahore to attend the two-day conference. Some 200 delegates from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are participating in the meet.
Representatives of Pakistani labour organisations welcomed the members of the Indian delegation by chanting slogans when they arrived at the Lahore terminal of the friendship bus service.
"Our visit affirms that workers who form majority of population in both India and Pakistan, want to promote friendship between the two countries," Surender Mohan, a 77-year-old leader of the Indian delegation told newsmen on arrival.
Mohan, a Haryana-based leader of agriculture workers, said majority of Indians wanted to have friendship with Pakistan.
"It was only few communalists and extremists in the region trying to jeopardise the peace process," he said.
