area of West Bengal's Dakshin Dinajpur district in the wee hours, BSF sources said.
One Bangladeshi smuggler was killed, while trying to cross over to the Indian side, when BSF personnel opened fire at the Purbasil border outpost, the sources at the north Bengal Frontier of BSF headquarters said.
BSF opened two rounds of fire as repeated warnings to the gang not to proceed into Indian territory yielded no response, BSF deputy commandant Vijay Sinha told a news agency over phone from the Kadamtala headquarters.
While one Bangladeshi national died on the spot during the firing at 3:30 am, others managed to escape under cover of darkness, Sinha said.
In a separate incident, shortly after the first one, at the Padmakumari border out post, BSF fired three rounds on a group of Bangladeshis killing one of them on the spot. The group, which was carrying some goods to Bangladesh, first attacked the jawans after being challenged forcing the BSF personnel to retaliate, Sinha said.
Both the Bangladeshis were residents of Bhander village under Birol Police Station of Dinajpur district in Bangladesh, the official said.
