New Delhi, Oct 13: Despite the downturn in overall exports which dipped at 4.19 per cent in August, government today said the target of 1,950 million dollars of handicrafts export this year would be achieved.
"The exports of handicrafts have shown more than 30 per cent growth in dollar terms. I believe the target of 1,950 million dollars will not only be achieved but will be surpassed," Textiles Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain said here.
The setting up of the exposition mart at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh would give a major fillip to the cottage sector, he told reporters after visiting the 16th edition of Indian Handicrafts and Gifts Fair (IHGF). There has been considerable progress on the project and the mart would start functioning by early 2005, giving a new direction to the trade and export of handicrafts, he said.
The last IHGF - spring 2003 - had generated a business of Rs 1,000 crore and this time the participation of exhibitors has gone up manifold, Hussain said.
Handicrafts export has gone up by 17 per cent to Rs 8,343 crore during 2002-03 from Rs 2,500 crore during 1994-95. The Latin American and CIS countries were high on the priority list of the government for export promotion, he said adding "I understand that the overwhelming presence of buyers' delegations from these countries will add a new chapter in the promotion of trade of handicrafts".
The textiles ministry was taking all measures to achieve the targeted one per cent of global trade envisaged in the medium term export strategy, he said.
