Chennai, June 19: President A P J Abdul Kalam today said that cost of education was very high and should be brought down. "I personally believe the cost is very high. It is essential that this is brought down", he said while answering questions after delivering a special lecture on "Engineering Education and National Development" in connection with the silver jubilee celebrations of Anna University here.

However, education cannot be free and affordable would have to pay, he said.

Stating that the Centre had made primary education upto class VIII compulsory, he said he had given his assent to the necessary legislation.

On the "brain drain", he said it was an "imaginary animal" but should not cause over worry as about only 10 per cent of the 3,00,000 persons passing out of engineering colleges each year left the country.

"The umbilical connection is very strong", he said and added that the country should invest in good R&D laboratories which would also attract people even from developed countries.

Earlier, in his special lecture, Kalam asked those responsible for imparting knowledge to children, adolescents, young men and women to work towards making their wards leaders who had capacity to respect authority while at the same time had courage to question authority.

Teachers, he said, should inspire their students by taking responsibility when things went wrong and let their wards take the credit for achievements.
