Raiganj (WB), Oct 02: Eleven people died and 2000 others have been affected by diarrhoea in nine blocks in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district during the past one week, an official said here today. Of the eleven deaths, five have been reported from Islampur sub-division and rest six from Raiganj sub-division, T K Das, Chief Medical Officer of the district said.

However, unofficial sources claimed that 25 people had so far died and 3000 affected in diarrohoea in the district.
Das said that the cause of the disease might be due to contaminated water from tubewells.

The District Magistrate Ariz Aftab said that the administration had made arrangements for testing drinking water in the affected areas.

In view of the seriousness of the disease, leave for Durga Puja for health department employees in the district had been cancelled, Aftab said adding that a special control room had been opened to meet the emergency situation.
