New Delhi, July 11: Amidst a major power crisis in the capital coinciding with the privatisation of distribution network, Delhi government today indicated a hike in electricity tariff for the consumers. "Electricity rates will be increased in the short run...But the hike will not be as high as last year," Jagdish Sagar, chairman and managing director of Delhi power supply company, said here.

Last year the tariffs were increased by about 22 per cent, he said adding once the power scenario of the national capital improved the power tariffs would stabilise or even come down.

Delhi government recently unbundled the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board and the management of distribution network went to private companies, Tata power and BSEs. Both the companies claimed that once the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses were reduced to the desired level, the power situation would automatically improve.
