Jammu, May 05: Private transport operators of Jammu called off their strike today and agreed to the fare structure announced by the government recently. The strike was called off on the appeal made by deputy chief minister Mangat Ram Sharma. The announcement to this effect was made by the president of private transporters association, T S Wazir, at a meeting of government officials and representatives of the transporters here, an official release said.
Mini bus operators went on strike in Jammu division on April 29 in protest against the government decision reducing minimum fare charges to Rs 1.50 upto 2 km and imposing passenger tax on them. Other private transporters joined the strike later.
Wazir appealed the transporters and mini bus operators to restart operation of vehicles and strictly adhere to the revised fare schedule.

Sharma promised the transporters that their other demands - waiving passenger, toll and token tax - would be discussed by the government within this month.

He made it clear there would be no compromise with the interests of the people and government would do everything possible to provide the best transport system to them.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that various measures were being taken to streamline the transport system.
