New Delhi, July 18: With an aim to ensure access to quality education to all children in the national capital, the Delhi government would embark on a massive door-to-door survey beginning tomorrow to identify non-school going children in the 0-14 age group to bring them in the education stream. "Around 28,000 teachers would take part in the survey, to be held on July 19, 20, 26 and 27, to ascertain the exact number of children deprived of quality formal education in the state.

Once equipped with the adequate data we would open 'learning centres' across the state for the benefit of these children," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said. The survey would help to identify the locations for setting up more learning centres, both formal and alternate, she said.

"Over 450 centres are functioning at present in Delhi and by the year end this figure would reach around 2500," she said, adding the project's total cost was estimated at Rs 16 crore, out of which 75 per cent would be borne by the centre.

To be opened with the help of NGOs, these learning centres would operate in community centres and will have flexible timings for those who were unable to attend schools because of time constraints, she said. She said the state was divided into 1810 segments and 2800 teams would cover each of them during the survey which was part of the 'sarva siksha abhiyaan' implemented by Universalisation of Elementary Education Mission (UEEM), a non-profit organisation formed by the Delhi government's Department of Education.

The learning centres, which will have classes upto 8th, will offer state government's education syllabus, she said.
