Bhopal, Nov 09: In an embarrassment for ruling Congress in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, veteran leader and former chief minister Govind Narain Singh today resigned from the party accusing it of "degenerating and failing to serve people".

"I resigned from the primary membership of Congress after a 66-year-long innings because the party is no more the same old Congress. It has snapped all links with democratic socialism and lost all its values and ideals," the 84-year-old leader told reporters here.
Charging Congress with playing "casteist" politics, Singh alleged that corruption has become acceptable to all in different walks of life.
Asked whether Congress president Sonia Gandhi's foreign origin has affected the party, the former Bihar governor said "it is not a question of foreign origin...Party's culture has changed and the organisation has degenerated."
Criticising the performance of Digvijay Singh government since 1993, Singh said "when I was Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh was power surplus. Now there is no effort to enhance electricity generation through hydel or thermal projects and the state has to depend on outside sources for power."
