Zari is getting itself an image revamp. Tired of adorning the heavy Kanjeevaram saris of indolent socialites, the gold-coated thread is finding its way into electrodes and laboratories. The LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad now uses zari as the electrode in pattern electro-retinograms (PERGs) because it is much cheaper than conventional electrodes.

The new zari-incorporating electrode is called the LVP electrode. It was invented by a 29-year-old optometrist from Salem, LS Mohan Ram, who finds place in the Limca Book of Records for this feat. Zari costs Rs 600 for 500 grams, while an imported DTL electrode costs $600 per year, says Mr Mohan Ram.
