Vadodara, July 30: District administration of Narmada, Bharuch and Vadodara are gearing up against possible floods as the water level at the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada crossed the dam height of 103 mts at noon yesterday.
Narmada district collector D G Jhalawadia said rescue teams had been despatched to Nandod and Tilakwada talukas as 32 villages were under threat of floods in the Narmada after the level in the dam touched 107.75 mts mark. People in all low-lying areas, including those in Bharuch city, have been alerted although there was no report yet of any inundation from any part of the district, Jhalawadia said and added that the administration was fully geared up to meet any eventuality.
According to flood control room sources, at present the inflow of water into the Narmada dam was 4.38 lakh cusecs per hour resulting in the overflow of 3.10 lakh cusecs of water. The authorities have also released 22,000 cusecs through the Narmada canal.
The sources said since there was some decrease in the rainfall in the upper catchment areas during the last 24 hours, the level in the Narmada dam was likely to recede.

In Vadodara, the authorities have sounded alert in Karjan, Sinor and Dabhoi talukas, close to the Narmada River and taken precautionary measures to tackle the situation.

Yesterday, two sisters Hiraben Rathodia (55) and Sitaben Rathodia (65) of Kandara village in Padra taluka of the district were buried alive when their house collapsed because of incessant rains in the area.

Meanwhile, in Vadodara the Ajwa Sarovar was flowing only three feet below its danger level of 212 ft. The other two major Sarovars at Pratappura and Viswamitri were also reportedly fast approaching towards their danger mark, the sources said.
