New Delhi, Nov 18: A Congress petition to election
commission, seeking disqualification of BJP's chief
ministerial candidate for Delhi Madan Lal Khurana, is likely
to die a silent death with the election body showing a cold
response to it.
Admitting that a complaint had been received, Election
Commission officials said it was not substantiated by proof.
"Simply holding an office does not mean it is an office of profit," an EC official said today, adding if the complainants were serious, they should have approached the returning officer before scrutiny of nominations.
Congress petitioned Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh yesterday seeking Khurana's disqualification from electoral contest, arguing that he was holding the "office of profit" as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation chairman when he filed his nomination papers for the Delhi Assembly polls.
Khurana also brushed aside the allegation, asserting that as DMRC chairman he was receiving no salary or perks.
"Even when I joined as DMRC chairman, I had taken written clearance from lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi as I am a member of the House," he said.
Khurana said Congress had "woken up late" as his nomination had already been cleared by the Election Commission.
