Kolkata, July 06: Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani today found his cruise by launch on the River Hooghly so invigorating and edifying that he scrambled onto the deck,
ignoring security, for a clearer view of the renowned Ghats and promised to take measures for their renovation.
Advani who visited the Belur Math in adjoining Howrah district this morning made a 40 minute cruise by a Kolkata port trust launch to the man o' war jetty in the metropolis.
Advani waved enthusiastically from the launch to the people crowding the banks and expressed deep interest in the history of the old Ghats. "He was so impressed at the sight of the river and its famous Ghats that he went up to the deck, giving a tough time to his security," Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who accompanied him on board, told a news agency.
Advani asked Kopt chairman Dr Anup Chandra and him "to accompany him on to the deck totally in defiance of security concerns," Bandhopadhyay said. Bandyopadhyay later presented a photo-album of 32 Ghats on the river to Advani and sought his support for a renovation project for them and beautification of an 11 km stretch on the banks from Kashipur to Princep Ghat in the metropolis.
"Advaniji has assured me to take the initiative for the project which is estimated by the shipping ministry to cost about Rs 44.50 crore," Bandyopadhyay said. Bureau Report
