US President George W Bush said on Monday the United States would emerge stronger from the terrorist onslaught of September 11 despite suffering an economic shock. “We will come out of this and we will come out of it strong,” Bush told reporters in a defiant message at the White House`s rose garden.
These terrorists thought they could affect the United States, they thought they could diminish our soul. They just strengthened our country and while the numbers are not going to look too good in the short run, we will be a stronger nation as a result of this. Bush said he had enough anecdotal evidence to know that people were being hurt and there were too many layoffs.
“I am concerned about the shock this has had on our economy and I am concerned about obviously the impact of the airlines for example (on the economy), The president said.
The top six US airlines laid off more than 70,000 employees after hijackers commandeered four jets and used them in suicide attacks. Two planes flattened New York`s World Trade Center, one wrecked part of the pentagon and one crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. But Bush noted that he had signed into law Saturday an emergency $ 15-billion airline bailout comprising five billion dollars in cash and $ 10 billion in loan guarantees.
In addition, the senate had already passed a $ 40-billion bill to help rebuild New York and respond to the attacks.
