Meghalaya government rules out possibility of Sangma`s arrest
Shillong, June 28: The Meghalaya government today discounted any possibility of arrest of the NCP National General Secretary, Purno a Sangma, on arrival here tomorrow, though it has been warning consistently that steps would be taken against those acting as unauthorised go-betweens with militants in the state as the former Lok Sabha Speaker had expressed his wish to do so.
Shillong, June 28: The Meghalaya government today
discounted any possibility of arrest of the NCP National
General Secretary, Purno a Sangma, on arrival here tomorrow,
though it has been warning consistently that steps would be
taken against those acting as unauthorised go-betweens with
militants in the state as the former Lok Sabha Speaker had
expressed his wish to do so.
''If there is any evidence linking any politician or
businessman with militants, the police will act the same way
as it had by arresting the senior NCP leader, Adolf Hitler
Marak,'' the state home minister, R G Lyngdoh, told a news agency.
Asked to give a direct reply, Lyngdoh shot back, saying
''Why, is there any evidence against Sangma also.''
The home minister said the arrest of Marak was a 'result
of police investigation' as his vehicle was used by militants
and no ''political angle should be read into it''.
Marak was arrested yesterday on the charge of allowing his vehicle to be used for carrying militants.
Lyngdoh, however, maintained that law would be equal to everyone.
When his attention was drawn to the NCP, MP, Robert Kharsiing's fears of a constitutional breakdown in the event of Sangma's arrest, the home minister said smiling, ''I don't think there is a room for speculation. We are going too wild.''
