In first ever public remarks since the declaration of emergency in Nepal on November 26, Nepalese King Gyanendra has said the decision was a compulsion as the government did not have a choice.
“The state of emergency was never my choice. It was a compulsion for us. I have never favoured this idea (of imposing emergency). The Army have no other option than disarming the Maoists,” King Gyanendra Told 'Nayasadak', a Nepali language daily.
Under the Nepalese constitution, the king - who is the commander-in-chief of the Army - declares the state of emergency at the advice of the Prime Minister.
The Nepalese monarch expressed sorrow over the bloodshed in the country that has claimed several hundred lives in the past few days. The remarks come close on the heels of a massive strike against the Maoists in Rolpa district on Saturday in which over 60 rebels were killed.
