Government on Tuesday decided to bring a legislation in Parliament to grant the right of proxy voting for the armed forces personnel serving in far-flung areas of the country.
The Union Cabinet, which met Tuesday evening, considered an amendment to this effect in the representation of the people act and decided to press for the legislation which is already before Parliament, law minister Arun Jaitley told reporters after the meeting.
In another significant step, the Cabinet decided to set up the national youth commission in accordance with the announcement made by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The Cabinet also considered the report of the department-related standing committee on civil procedure code and accepted some of the suggestions made by it, Jaitley said, adding that consequently, it approved certain amendments in the code.
It also approved the introduction of a bill to amend the infant milk substitute act to encourage breast-feeding. India has been a signatory to an agreement on the issue at the World Health Association Conference in 1981.
