Jenin, Dec 07: An Islamic Jihad militant was shot dead and five other Palestinians, mostly young stone-throwers, were wounded by Israeli troops in a failed arrest attempt in the Northern West Bank, sources on both sides said.
Abed al-Hady Zeyud, 21, was shot dead yesterday after about a dozen Israeli jeeps and tanks entered the village of Silat al-Harithiya, 10 kms northwest of Jenin, to arrest him and clashed with the stone-throwers, Palestinian medical sources and an Islamic Jihad spokesman said.
An Israeli military source confirmed troops entered the village to arrest "an Islamic Jihad terrorist responsible for many terrorist attacks in the area".
"He spotted the force and ran away. The soldiers ran after him, shouted to him to stop, and fired warning shots in the air. When he still didn't stop, they fired at him and killed him," he said.
A search of Zeyud's house uncovered an M-16 automatic rifle and several magazines of ammunition, he said.

The soldiers clashed with the stone-throwers just before they moved in on the militant from Islamic Jihad, which has carried out scores of anti-Israeli attacks and suicide bombings, the sources said.

Four of the stone-throwers were wounded, while a fifth person, a 40-year-old man, was hit near his home, they said.
