Federer focuses on aggressive play
Halle, June 13: Federer is looking for confidence after a disastrous French Open Roger Federer continued his comeback after the disappointment of Paris with a 4-6 6-2 6-1 victory over Fernando Vicente at the Gerry Weber Open.
The Swiss top seed had been in fine form this year, winning three titles, before heading to the French Open, where he lost in the first round. But with Wimbledon around the corner he is keen to get back on track, and has made the final of the grasscourt event in Halle for the third successive year.
"I thought from the start I could win this tournament," said Federer. "With my ranking, my game, I can win a lot of events. Lately, I've been better at winning finals too.
"I've come here several years and always wanted to win this tournament, because I've never won a title on grass - that's missing."
Federer suffered another first-round defeat at last year's Wimbledon and plans to play from the net more this year.
"What I want to do, to get ready for Wimbledon, is play more aggressively," he said. "You'll see me rushing the net more in the next few days."
Elsewhere, Slovakia's Karol Kucera swept past France's Fabrice Santoro 6-3 6-3. Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco had little trouble seeing off Germany's Lars Burgmueller 6-3 6-3, while Arnaud Clement beat Ivan Ljubicic 6-4 6-2.
