New Delhi, Aug 26: Can the Delhi police pre-empt a Mumbai-type blast?
The threat perception in Delhi is always high, as all the country's major symbols of democracy - the Parliament, Supreme Court, Rashtrapati Bhavan - are found here. So our police has to be on high alert. After the Mumbai blasts, we have re-checked our security settings. What special steps have been taken?

All patrols have been alerted. The anti-terrorist squad has been asked to carry out special checking, especially at taxi stands and major commercial areas, as these were target points in Mumbai. We're using sniffer dogs and even the bomb squad has been called in.

Can dogs really help find explosive devices?
Dogs are helpful in only about 20 per cent of cases. Another 20 per cent are detected by machines and 40 per cent via manual checking. The remaining 20 per cent is checked through human intelligence, which involves knowledge of the criminal mind.

Could you hazard a guess why the Mumbai blasts took place?

The blasts were intended to disrupt the normal functioning of civil society. I cannot be certain, but a few people are saying the terrorists responsible intend to disrupt the flow of investment and tourism into the state. Plus, the blasts occurred on the day Sunjay Dutt's case was to be heard in a Mumbai court. What difficulties does the police face while tracking down terrorists?

Many areas in the country have seen unorganised urbanisation with no proper data collation on residents. I myself have come across a vehicle sold at three places at the same time to three different people.

Does the police get the people's support?
People are now a lot more forthcoming. Even the police's image has changed from that of a governing body to an organisation that helps people.

How do you use your leisure time?
I listen to light and classical music. I also have a special interest in low-light photography.

Do you experiment with your life?

I have decided to pursue my hobbies very seriously. Life is too small and one has to find time for everything.
