About ten million central and state government employees, including teachers, are poised to go on a country-wide strike on Wednesday to demand a halt to privatisation and downsizing of government departments.
The strike would be the biggest ever in the governmental sector, the confederation of central government employees and workers and All India State Government Employees Federation said in a joint statement in New Delhi on Monday. Stating that the strike call had elicited a positive response from all sections of central and state government employees and teachers, the federations said the shut-down would serve as a ''warning'' to the government to drop its ''anti-worker and anti-employee policies''.
''The countrywide historic strike by about ten million government employees and teachers is directed against the policy of rampant privatisation, closing down, retrenchment, downsizing by the central and most of the state governments. Their policy of capitalist globalisation is nothing but selling the country to the multi-national companies and imperialist interest,'' the fedederations said. Bureau Report
